My Dinner With Clarence Thomas

Well I didn't eat "Dinner" with him even thought I had cocktails at a event he was at once. However some else did a few days ago. There is a great article on US Supreme Court Clarence Thomas I have linked at the bottom of this post. . It appears he was at a dinner party promoting his book among "bloggers". I think there are some great insights into the man here. I had the honor of meeting him when he came to LSU. He is a very personable man. Actually all the US Supreme Court Justices I have met were pretty cool. I have also met Justice Ginsburg( along with 60 other students that drank Mimosas with her before the LSU /Bama game- LSU lost that day) Anthony Kennedy, and Justice Scalia. All have a pretty good sense of humor. I was very struck when a student asked Justice Ginsburg about Chief Justice Rehnquist. She was very glowing about him and we got crucial hints of relationships that often are so hidden.

If one has much legal training one will find that the US Supreme Court reporting is pretty horrid as a rule. In fact they never seem to grasp the issue that is at stake. Their lack of understanding or even interest in Justice Thomas and his views has been almost criminal. There have been exceptions. I can't remember if I saw it the blog Beneath the Robes or where it was but there was quite a good talk given by ABC Supreme Court Reporter. She is a BAMA woman by the way. Anyway she really talked about how journalisst had really missed the boat on Justice Thomas. For years he was called a Scalia clone which was very far from the truth.

Well on to the article. Tip of the Hat to From Burke to Kirk and Beyond... that lead me this piece My Dinner With Clarence Thomas. A little fun quote to wet your appetite to read it. On the subject if he would be promoting his book at Columbia University he said:
"About the only way I would get invited to Columbia is if I was a Middle East dictator with nuclear weapons.”

Good read.
