Democrats and McCain both starting to make Play For Catholic Vote

Pro- Ecclesia has more at Democratic Battle for Catholics Intensifies , National Catholic Register: "Soul of the Democrat Party Still Secular" and McCain Making Quiet Play for Catholic Vote

On a related note VOX NOVA had this post Doug Kmiec tells Hudson: You Are Right. The poster there is I think an Catholic Obama supporter(Update see comment section Not an Obama Supporter). The battle lines are being drawn there as we see in his post.

I think more discussion needs to be had of social justice as it connects to the Catholic vote. But more importantly, I think more needs to be said about how and why McCain doesn’t really follow the Catholic non-negotiables. Catholics should not be fooled into voting for McCain on false premises. This does not mean they shouldn’t vote for McCain — just that it shouldn’t be a vote based upon lies. We should always be able to give reasons for our vote, whomever we vote for. But we must also realize that our reasons should be ones which satisfy our own conscience, not the consciences of other people.

Lies? What lies are those? It is true that Orthodox Catholics would want McCain to be more in line with our thoughts on Stem Cell research but the difference btween McCain and Obama and Hillary as to these non-negotiables is NIGHT and DAY.

I find it odd and a tad sad that Catholics that are always talking about Social Justice concerns are not really giving McCain his due on several issues. What about on immigration reform? A issue that was very politically risky for McCain. Catholics can disagree on the merits of that legislation but needless to say McCain took the heat for what was mainly the US Bishops position. There were other areas where McCain should be getting some kudos.

Torture is another issue on which McCain has taken a position more in line with the Church, for which he has also taken a lot of heat from Republicans. One contributor to National Review (and a Catholic at that) even went so far as to say that McCain is "not one of us" because of his stance on torture.
