I am with the Liberals On Huckabee

Yes Iagree with Vox Nova sometimes.

Two Catholic blogs , one more conservative one more liberal in tone on the issue of Huckabee and the infamous pardon.

I agree with the comments I guess at Vox Nova a lot more. That might come from seeing and being involved with the system than a lot of folks. The real scandal is that Presidents and Governors don't use the pardon power more. I think a lot more damage is done by not doing so.

It is a sad fact that Christians seem to be far less concerned about the Prisoner than our faith dictates. One does not have to be a "soft on crime"person to realize that epidemic of Prison rape is not a good thing. Yet we stand by as we treat it like a joke. I suspect if I got raped and got exposed to HIV as the guards did nothing I would be a pretty bad SOB when I got out. This happens at far depressing high levels and yet Christians for the most part don't seem all that concerned.

Or that for some "drug offenses' and other matters it makes little sense for the taxpayers to be paying 25,000 dollars a year on average to house people for excessive years. Or for that matter that the taking away of discretion in sentencing from Prosecutors and judges by ever increasing Mandatory Minimum Sentencing laws has produced a cluster you know what.

A prime example of this is Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Prosecutors even hated this charge in Louisiana because they could see it was often more times than not unjust. Many of a person that had a non violent Felony was later found in possession of a firearm. Poof they are facing at the very least ten years hard labor. Many of the prosecutors and Judges realized that many of these folks were facing the real horrific option of not having a firearm to protect their family in some high crime areas or face going to jail.

Again there is a lot of real world gray and common sense that get swept away in being tough on crime mantra . Sort of like these assorted "No Tolerance" school policies where school yard fights now result with kids being put in jail.

All this is often a result of politicians exhibiting a political cowardliness and not wanting to have to make hard choices that might at times be unpopular.

Much of this is contributing to Prisioners being much worse when they came out than they went in. No one wants to talk about the deaths related to that.
