A Overview of Diplomatic Relations Between the United States and The Vatican

Tip of the hat to Pro-Ecclesia that had a link another post by a Law Prof Blogger. See The US Ambassador to the Holy See and the First Amendment. As we see it is quite a long history. It was interrupted by evnets that no doubt had its orgins in fear of Catholic immigrants.

Even the Ole Confederate States had relations with the Vatican in the deep Protestant South. This by the way has led to numerous Catholic conspiracy theories( THE JESUITS KILLED LINCOLN) and others.

We should send an ambassador to the Vatican for the same reason that we send ambassadors to all the other European micro-countries (Liechtenstein, Monaco, etc.).
But we cannot expect President Obama or any other president to appoint ambassadors who will undermine his own clearly-expressed policies.
The US ambassador to the Holy See will be pro-abortion. The Vatican must put up or shut up. Unless the Vatican doesn’t really want to be treated like other countries? .

Needless to say this does not sound very "Diplomatic". Further just because Obama is "Pro Choice" does not mean his Democrat Envoys have to be.

The Clinton White House that often had some serious goofs with relations with the Vatican sent two very well respected "Pro-Life Democrats" as envoys. He was if memory serves me right pro abortion too. Neither Lindy Bogs or Flynn undermined Clinton but represented the U.S. with dignity.
