This comes up every year in Catholic and Protestant homilies and meditations around Christmas. I think we know the underlying story.
I saw that the "Primate" of the Episcopal Church USA has given her Christmas Message. I must say this message is 1000 percent improvement over her Easter message last year.
Therefore I am giving her a pass on this message though we see others are not at IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE SCHORI via MCJ
But like a lot of good well meaning people she says "Born in poverty to a homeless couple".
Ugh Not really. as the poster at MCJ pointed out:
Annnnnnnnnnd there it is. For the LAST TIME!! Joseph and Mary were NOT HOMELESS!! Joseph had a job in NAZARETH!! He was a CARPENTER!! The ONLY REASON he and Mary had to go to Bethlehem was because some big-government type off in Rome said everyone in the Roman Empire HAD TO!!
That is very true. If I go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and fail to find a hotel room am I "homeless" Uh no not really.
Associated with this is the poor Inn Keeper that now has gone down in history and countless children plays of this event as some horrible human being. I played a role in this. When I was a young tyke I had to play the role of the Inn Keeper. I announced in a rather gruff and mean voice THERE IS NO ROOM LEAVE!!! Now of course if this occurred in the 20th century I suppose the poor Clerk working the night shift at the Econo Lodge would be portrayed as something hideous for centuries.
What was the Inn Keeper suppose to do keep kick someone out? Much like the good intentions in making the Holy Family Homeless this is suppose to teach some lesson in hospitality.
The verse in question that has made the Innkeeper in such a bad light is just one and we find out that perhaps there was no "inn" at all and that in fact people were trying to help out the Holy Family as best as they could
It would be ironic that in a effort to show a lesson on hospitality that we have ignored or did not see the true story under our noses.
