Get Religion has a good post on this at Bush’s faith: still the same? The comments are good too.
Of course the cartoon version (BUSH THE WIDE EYED DANGEROUS FUNDAMENTALIST) and various related themes have never been true. The fact that is was advanced I hate to say by many Christians that opposed Bush is very sad.
A big clue is of course he was a practicing Methodist in Texas. Texas Methodists are really not extreme. Add the fact that Bush still practices his Episcopal Faith he was raised in to some degree (he regularly takes communion at an Episcopal Church across from the White House) , his interesting interaction with Catholics, and a million other things and this should have been apparent. But because this goes off the script (BUSH THINKS GOD TOLD HIM TO GO TO WAR) and other nonsense it was ignored. Which is again a tad sad.
Update-
Another item is Bush's view of Islam which Bush thinks is a peaceful religion at its core. This repeated assertion of his that he showed in talk and actions would drive some religious conservatives up the wall. It irked them to no end. However he never got credited for this by the secular media or those that opposed some of his policies. Again it went against the silly charge of Bush's Crusade against Muslims that believe it or not was out there.
