A Devout Catholic Has A Real Chance of Defeating William Jefferson

As I noted before there were still some Federal Races left in 08. Because of the two hurricanes Louisiana had elections were delayed. Now we are in the General. On a practical note this is the first time Louisiana has had "Closed" primary election for Congressional Offices in some times.

The Hurricanes were not a blessing that is for sure but it has given opponents of William Jefferson a chance to get him out.

In all likelihood if the election had been held in Nov then Jefferson would have beat his Republican challenger because of great black turnout. However there is cause to believe the GOP and Pro-lifers can win this one.

There was a article on this race today in a Louisiana paper called GOP thinks it has chance to unseat Rep. Jefferson

I had a post on his opponent a week or so ago at A "Jesuit Man" Runs Against Congressman William Jefferson

Jefferson is flat broke. Also there is big possibility that this mainly New Orleans seat might disappear after the census. So will people invest a lot of money in Jefferson. “Joseph” Cao seems like a good guy and his vote could be crucial the next couple of years.

What is intriguing and what gives hope to many of us is how Jefferson had trouble in the Dem Primary on November 4th.

92,921
56.79%
William J. Jefferson, D
Elected

70,705
43.21%
Helena Moreno, D

Now he beat her by a good percentage but African American Turnout will not be as big in this election for obvious reasons. Jefferson is not running on the same date as Obama this time.

Further get the GOP into action and independents and there is a real shot. I have not looked at all the numbers but I have got to think that Jefferson must have suffered some African American defections to Moreno (She is often labeled white but I think she is really Hispanic/ Latino/ White).

A race to watch, send money too and pray about.
