VOX Nova brings up if Urbanization also come into play. As I noted in the comment section I am not sure. Look at Cities like New Orleans and others that were very religious. I mention the real culprit might be the burbs that sort of upset traditional Neighbor life as well as those of neighborhood churches.

When you introduce modern technology and the advent of the "pill" I think there can be case made that a perfect disaster was to be had.

While this focuses on Europe to a certain degree questions must be asked if this scenario is not only acting out in the USA but accelerating.

This topic is always a sensitive one in all religious congregations Catholic or not. However the irony is that Evangelicals if they start engaging this topic on a mass scale could be crucial in making sure we do not become the New Europe. I get a sense the powers that be know this and we see signs of it. For instance often Catholic NFP classes are full of Evangelicals. But it is still a minority movement. Hopefully that will change.
