I mention in my last post the situation with Catholics protesting Churches closing in New Orleans depresses me. For the Greater Glory has a good take on it here at Hughes Moves to End Scandal
There is a lot going on here and it is the reason why I find it depressing.
First it is apparent the Catholic New Orleans that Ann Rice so describes in her recent book is not coming back. In fact it is not clear New Orleans will come back at all. It might and it is related to the solution!! These Churches are linked to their culture and faith life and their city and it sad. But heck it is not all the Priest shortage. People have moved to the burbs or worse out of Louisiana.
Second there is a Priest shortage of course. This is related to the solution too!!! Though Catholic New Orleans folks have too accept responsibility for this. Why are their vocations in the Diocese of Alexandria (which is largely rural) and not as many in the ArchDiocese. I think I know the answer to that and the blame goes out in a thousand direction BUT HECK YEAH THE PEOPLE IN THE PEWS (that actually literally produce the vocations) played a role in this.
Third well it is just sad.
What is the solution!!!
Well I think a good place to start is what EXPAT YAT and Priest Da Mihi Animas posted today. See Our Lady of Prompt Succor: Patroness of New Orleans
It is a start.
