Senator Brownback Calls Huckabee "authentic conservative"

I found this very significant article online. Brownback not surprised by Huckabee's surge.

Before I decided to support Governor Huckabee, I was torn between him and Brownback and McCain. In the end it came down between Brownback and Huckabee and I chose Huckabee.

I have the greatest repect in the world for Senator Brownback. I should also add that many Catholics and espcially converts too note of his run. Brownback like Huckabee is a man that had appeal to both Catholics and Evangelicals of a political conservative and moderate mindset . This article should be circulated. Especially to Catholic voters.

Former Republican presidential candidate Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) is commending former GOP rival Mike Huckabee for his rise in the polls, calling him "an authentic conservative."

Brownback says his short-lived bid for the White House was a "fantastic experience" that allowed to him to get to know the country better and realize again that "you cannot micromanage America and you shouldn't try." He says time on the campaign trail re-instilled his belief that America needs to "rebuild the family," which he argues is "hurting."
While still in the race, Brownback was competing aggressively with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee for the support of social conservatives. But Huckabee's surging poll numbers do not surprise the Kansas Republican. Brownback says when he first entered the race he had trouble with name recognition. "When I first announced I was running and people were saying, you know, 'what's that guy's name again, Brownback?' You know they would do that on Huckabee, too. 'Hucklebee, Huckle-what?'" he says.
However, he says he did see a need for a strong, authentic conservative, and he says he knew the electorate was out there that could vote in a candidate like that. Brownback says Huckabee's challenge after securing the social conservative base is to build support among economic conservatives, which he believes will be a more difficult task for the former Arkansas governor. Brownback, who has endorsed fellow Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), expects the GOP race to remain fluid through at least January.
When asked about Huckabee's controversial Christmas ad, which allegedly features a "floating cross," Brownback said all he saw was a bookshelf. He says people need to get over it, and that he does not feel Huckabee was trying to send a subliminal message in order to impose his evangelical Christian beliefs on Americans.
However, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League argues that the Huckabee ad was intended to "give the appearance of the cross" and was inappropriately "injecting religion into politics."

Brownback isn't particularly conservative either and conservative Catholics know better. I am a lifelong Catholic. I support Fred Thompson, who truly IS conservative.

I guess I have the minority postion among bloggers. I think all this over the top rethoric among the Huckabee, McCain, THompson, and varuious other camps is a lot of hot air. The problem I have with ROmeny is he has had too many recent conversions on too many issue. At least with Rudy he is consistent.

But as to the beforementioned 3 and Brownback they are all squarely in my view in the conservative camp. None of the above(romney, McCain, Huckabee, or THompson) could be called Rockerfellar Republicans). So I think much of this is fine tuning and really testing the mettle of who we will choose to eb the nominee against the true non conservatives

I'm a New Yorker (eastern upstate), so I am familiar with Rudy, who, I'm sure you know, switched parties. My feeling is that the GOP was scared crapless by the thought of Hillary and looked around for someone they thought could beat her. Hence Rudy.

Now, it may surprise you, but I agree with you somewhat on Giuliani and have said so in various places around the blogosphere. What I've said amounts to this: Whereas I disagree with Rudy on all social issues, his negatives in that arena are a known entity. Romney and Huckabee are murky because of their pasts and either flip-flopping or repudiation of prior views. So. If it comes down to those 3, I would prefer Rudy because with him you know what you are getting and therefore he can be controlled because he knows what we want.

Does that make sense to you?

However, until that thressome is inevitable, I must in good conscience, support the candidate who is the across-the-board conservative, the one who best represents what we fought against when we fought Shamnesty, the one who best represents what we have been so displeased with-the lack of President Bush's veto pen when it comes to spending.

And that candidate is Fred Thompson. He has more foreign affairs experience than Rudy and he has already fought the good fight against the Clintons and their China/Iran/Pakistan connections and is willing to go there again. He has spoken out against domestic jihadist organisations such as CAIR and is well aware that we are fighting a global war against Islamists - not just the PC "radical Islam."

One more thing. Both Huckabee and Romney are nanny-staters on healthcare. That position is not the conservative position.

Ok as to HEalth Care. I am not sure I would call Huckabee endorsing the Nanny State. What he supports so do a lot of Republican and conservative Governors. I can think as to the Child Health Care the very conservtive Bobby Jindal also seems to be in Huckabee camp.

I do find Romney's health Care plan interesting. I am just very surprised it is not being discussed. You would think it would be a big thing. If memory serves me right several conservative organizations thought it was a good idea. However for some reason we have heard nada about it this year. I am not sure why.

As to Flip Flopping. Well I see your point. Rudy has kept his positions while Romney has flip flopped big time on many issues. I guess that is why I respect Rudy more. As to Huckabee I think his record is clear in Arkansas and I am not seeing him run away from it.

I guess I am more comfortable with Governors that actually ahd to run things. To deal with the Federal mandates that come down. THough a Senator is not out of the question for me.

I guess when I see Fred THompson I see Mccain lite. Which is not a bad thing. I suppose my question as to THompson is why him when I can have the real thing with more experience with McCain. LEts face it. Thompson has done some flip flopping too as all have done to a certain degree to appeal to the right
