A Catholic Huckabee Supporter Responds to the Catholic League

I was out Christmas Shopping yesterday so I missed the comments of the Catholic League President William Donahue on the Huckabee Christmas Ad controversy. First let me say I support the Catholic League. I have progressed far enough politically not to get upset when a group I support disagrees with me on a issue of two to throw them over the bridge. So I hope all Catholics reading this post support hsi organization

That being said I am really left scratching my head at these comments:

But Catholic League president Bill Donahue said the former Arkansas governor went way beyond wishing people a joyous holiday.
He was especially disturbed by the cross-like image created by a white bookcase in the background of the ad, saying he believed it was a subliminal message.
''What he's trying to say to the evangelicals in western Iowa (is): I'm the real thing,'' Donahue said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's ''Fox and Friends. ''You know what, sell yourself on your issues, not on what your religion is.
''

Good Grief. IT IS A BOOK CASE. Also notice that in the ad that even goes out of the picture as the ad goes on. Repeat after me. It is a Book Case It is a Book Case. Also the 3 Christmas balls in the background do not represent the Trinity. They are just Christmas balls.

By the way I also noticed that a ton of hopefuls on both sides got their Christmas ads out so shall we be looking for subliminal messages there too.

The Corner talked about this the other day. Let me repost ithat in full because it gets to the point of what Donahue is saying on both fronts-

Huckabee: The Story Behind the Christmas Ad [Byron York]
I spoke with Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman last night about the Huckabee Christmas ad that has become the talk of the political world. He told me how it got started – the Huckabee team was looking for a way to acknowledge the awkwardness of a hard-fought political campaign going on at Christmastime, and also trying to figure out how to counter the negative ads they (correctly) believed were coming from the Romney camp. So they came up with a pretty simple idea – wish everybody a Merry Christmas – and Huckabee, sitting in a private home in Little Rock, ad-libbed the ad in two quick takes.Huckabee's performance, and the "celebration of the birth of Christ" appeal to Christian voters, reminded me of something I discussed with him several weeks ago. From the story:

In October, when he addressed the Values Voters summit in Washington, Huckabee gave the most overtly religious speech I have ever seen any candidate give. He didn’t simply say, as other candidates did, that he shared a common Judeo-Christian heritage with the audience. Instead, his speech was filled with Biblical references. He talked about David and Goliath. About Daniel in the lions’ den. About the loaves and the fishes. About Elijah and prophets of Ba’al. It was serious churchgoing stuff.I saw Huckabee a week or so later in Iowa, and I asked him whether the speech was too hot to give before a general audience.

He seemed a little surprised by the question. “The ultimate purpose of any speech,” he told me, “is to hit the target, and the target is your audience. I’ve heard people say, ‘Oh that was a brilliant speech, I didn’t understand it, it was way over my head, but it was a brilliant speech.’ Well, it wasn’t a brilliant speech. If a shooter consistently hits over the head of the target, it doesn’t prove that he’s a good shooter. It proves he can’t shoot. So the whole point is you aim for the target. The target in that room was people for whom faith was the motivating factor to be involved in public policy.”Spoken like a true preacher — or politician. Huckabee's astonishing ability to hit the target is what is shaking up the GOP race now.

See it was done n the quick. It was done it two quick takes with the Governor pretty much ad libbing. In case people have not noticed the Huckabee campaign is not a rich one. We don't have exactly loads of money to engage consultants in film making to put in subliminal messages.

The last episode of the Sopranos and the "Last Supper scene" that was in that is a example of Catholic and Christian subliminal messages and symbolism. The Huckabee ad with a few seconds shots of a book case is not!!! Huckabee was ina private home in Little Rock where this was filmed. It was all done with great speed.

As to Huckabee being too Christian in his message. Again look at the Corner blurb and Huckabee comments. Huckabee is good at targeting the people he wants to speak too. I have followed Huckabee for too long not to realize that he can target and speak to all sort of audiences. Including those where faith is not a big thing. That shall be coming too.

Did you make up the part about the three Christmas balls representing the Trinity? I laughed so loud, my teenage son came into the room and said, "What's so funny?" I repeated it to him, and he laughed too. Gotta remember to tell FIT about this one!

Domers for Huckabee

P.S. Hey, we're still awaitin' your call! :)
