More Jonesboro Louisiana Insanity- Now Even Christmas is Not Safe

The goofy things out Jonesboro Louisiana just keep coming. This Mayor is a piece of work. Here is the latest!!

The town of Jonesboro turns into a Christmas wonderland every holiday season.

Brianna Myres said, "I like to look at lights they're pretty."

Everything from trees to buildings and light posts are lined with lights.

Randy Layfield said, "It's a tradition we're proud of, our Christmas lights, it's a big deal at Christmas."

But, that could soon change. Layfield says mayor Leslie Thompson is threatening to cancel the celebration if the council doesn't approve his budget.

Layfield said, "The mayor has used political ploy, he's telling everyone we're not going to be able to do the Christmas lights because the council has not approved the budget."

The council says they went through the mayor's budget page by page and made necessary adjustments.

Layfield said, "He had money he used for a gospel concert the town paid for without the councils approval."

Now, he says the mayor is trying to force the council to do things his way. But, the mayor says that's not entirely the case. Thompson says the biggest issue is budgeting enough money for the annual event.

Mayor Leslie Thompson said, "If they don't pass a budget I won't be able to turn the lights on.

Layfield said, "If he chooses not to put the lights up this year it will be his own choice, not the council."

But, while the two sides try to come up with an agreement. Council members say tourist dollars the town desperately needs from the light show hangs in the balance.

One person here in these comments sees the bright side:
It’s pretty ridiculous; but, maybe not having the lights will get people to vote….nothing else seems to spur them on. It’s just really sad that so many are having a cow over Christmas lights when there are far greater atrocities occurring. Where’s the $750k missing as reported? When will the alleged dog poisoner go to trial? When will the DWI three-peat councilman go to trial? When will the assistant clerk accused of stealing over $12k in funds go to trial? What about the allegations of bribery to stop someone from running for police chief? The list goes on and on and on…..yet, the majority are upset because of lights. Pitiful!.
