Here we go again. I touched on this yesterday at Anti Immigration Folks Fearful of Lindsey Graham's Proposal on Birthright Citizenship.
Catholic Online brings us an article Thousands of Texas babies get U.S. birthrights. We learn in Texas alone that number is perhaps 60,000!!! Well you can bet some people will be upset at that.
Sadly though some of the public spokesmen for immigration reform are quoted. At times I wonder if they ever read that book dealing with how to win friends and influence people.
Opponents say the debate is not really about babies. They say it is about politics and votes, and not fixing the immigration system.
State Rep. Rafael Anchía, D-Dallas, has accused Republicans of using the births to generate an explosive election issue. "They're pulling the pin on the immigration grenade," he said. "It's all about the November elections and continuing to use the immigration issue as a wedge to win votes this fall.............Donald Kerwin, a vice president of the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., says he fears that altering the current interpretation of that law "would essentially restore the Dred Scott reasoning and create a hereditary underclass in the United States.
"These children, who didn't break any laws, would have no rights and nowhere to go," he said. "It's a very extreme position." ...............Sigh!! Dred Scott? First it is quite clear that the people talking about this in the Senate are part of the GOP that is friendly to immigration reform and athway to citizenship. Those being Graham, Kyl, and McCain. It seems a great number of people that oppose Pathway to Citizenship seem opposed changing the 14th at all.
I am wondering when immigration reform supporters are going to recognize this fact. As I pointed out yesterday tying passage of an amendment in Congress and tying it to Comprehensive immigration reform might get a bill passed!! Thus millions of people could be on the road pathway too Citizenship because it would ease concerns perhaps that a great number of Americans have. I think it can be discussed .
