Zach Lee Continues to Impress At LSU

Boy I am just getting a GOOD feeling about LSU football this year on all fronts

From Guilbeau

BATON ROUGE – One of issues with former LSU quarterback Chris Garrett was that he was content to not go all out as he waited his turn behind No. 1 and 2 quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee.

rue freshman quarterback Zach Lee of McKinney, Texas, may have realized he was the No. 4 quarterback when he reported for summer classes along with conditioning and seven-on-seven drills (without coaches) last June, but he was waiting for no one.

Lee called meetings with players – freshmen and veterans – and threw with every LSU receiver he could find. It was obvious very quickly that he was going somewhere – depth chart or no depth chart. Garrett has transferred to Northwestern State, and Lee is already making a name for himself just two months in as a Tiger.

“He’s pretty good,” said senior wide receiver Terrance Toliver, who has already played pitch and catch with Lee quite a bit. “He’s smart. He already knows the playbook well. I threw with him a few times after we’d finish working out just to see where he’s at. And he’s all over it. He’s pretty good. He’s got a strong arm.”

Lee, who is 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, threw for 2,565 yards and 31 touchdowns last season at McKinney High and was the No. 9-ranked pro style, prep quarterback in the nation, according to Rivals.com. He is also an elite baseball prospect with a fastball in the 90s, and the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft in early June. The very next day, though, he enrolled in classes at LSU and started looking for receivers as opposed to catchers. The Dodgers still have until Aug. 16 to sign him for millions, but as of now his plan is to play football and baseball for LSU.

“He’s just come in and had a great summer and provided leadership and gotten the young guys into the indoor and thrown balls and expects a lot of himself,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “He’s a very bright guy, very talented man. Certainly in our minds, he definitely has a future at quarterback.”

Lee was one of the many signee stars at LSU’s first freshmen practice Thursday afternoon.

“I thought he did really good,” Miles said. “He’s mobile, good arm. There’s a guy that’s going to get stronger in this program. He’ll have more and more skill.”

DODGER BLUE OR PURPLE AND GOLD? Miles is confident Lee will stay a Tiger and not become a Dodger at the last minute on the 16th.

“I think his want to be a college student and to play both championship football and baseball is still at the forefront here,” Miles said while knocking on wood.

“Yeah, it would shock me if he left,” Toliver said. “It would shock me. He hadn’t talked much about it. I asked him one time if he was going to go. And he was like, ‘I don’t think so.’ I think that being in college, going to class, I think he loved that, and being with the team. So I think that’s what he’s going to do – stay.”.................
