Oh no!! I guess some people might have to change their tune!! I love Thomas Jefferson but among us conservatives there is a tendency to give almost infalliable authority to what just a FEW( and I mean Few) Founding Fathers said. In fact it goes beyond any thing similar to Papal Infalliabilty since they quote every utterance even in private papers. Well he said it THERE!!! To be fair every political faction does this.

I guess I'd emphasize that the quote surprised the heck out of me, and I'm not sure what to make of it. Let's call it more of a question than an answer.
Don't you just love coming up with this stuff! I'm working on a PF post about our "founders" and their version of Church-State.

Yeah It surprised me too. I am glad you found it. I hope you can find more. At times I think we have a very simplistic view of the founding fathers and we all sort of put thme in our on political viewpoint

I can't wait to see it. I am just read a great book on Charles Carrollington and the author went into that. It is complex that is for sure
