Confession- I Always Hated Vacation Bible School

OSV has what some various Catholic Parishes were doing as to Vacation Bible School this summer.

It is not odd that Catholics have picked up this practice(which I support) but seems to have kept the very Sola Scriptura leaning title :) .

But gosh knows Catholics need to know the Bible and how to see it within the framework of the entire three legged stool of Scripture, Tradition, and Church teaching so that is good.

However I have a confession. I HATED just HATED when my mother sent me down for a week to our Southern Baptist Church for VBC. I guess I was lucky that she did not make me go to the one the Methodists were doing the next week.

First I hated it because it really interrupted my summer. That is sleeping late, watching the soap opera The Young and Restless that came on right after the Price is Right , riding my bike, reading a ton of books so I could get the prize at the summer reading program at the library, exploring the woods , and going to the swimming pool. To be fair it was largely over by noon so I could make the pool.

However what I really hated was this.

I just got a break from the kids in my class that for nine months out of the year I had to spend eight hours of the day with 5 days out of the week.

Since I lived in a small town BOOM at VBC my gosh there they are again in great numbers. I needed a break. I would see them at the pool, but it was big enough to where if I wanted to leave their company I could. FREEDOM!!

But my mother would say "I just don't want you be BORED". I was not bored I would plead but there I would be sent.

So there I was stuck in a Sunday School Classroom doing some activity that usually involved some insane arts and crafts (which as a general matter I really sucked at in regular school anyway) with several people that I was glad to get away from in the first place for just a couple of precious months.

From the above link at one Catholic Parish where the Eucharist and Adoration was a part of the VBC :
Holy Family Church in St. Louis Park brought together 250 children for a five-day camp that culminated in Eucharistic adoration for children and their parents.

"This, however, was not adoration in the classic sense. Rather than quiet reflection, the 250 kids engaged in songs and movements practiced all week during their CVBS (Catholic vacation Bible school) curriculum. The idea wasn’t so much to look at Jesus, but to experience him in song and prayer," reported The Catholic Spirit.

MOVEMENTS? What is that swaying? dancing? Good Grief. I would have hated that and no doubt would have not been good at that at all.

Now that bashing that and Catholic Parishes need to be doing this. However I suspect I would have not been pleased if I was there..

VBC is not for for kids that want to nourish their loner streak in the summer and enjoy just being by themselves. :)
