Here Come the Louisiana University Cuts

Oh this is going to be brutal. The Advocate has the story on what the state wide College Leadership was brief on at the Governor Mansion on Friday.

On the bright side to some degree all schools in the USA are having to do this to some degree so our schools should not be at a huge disadvantage

1) Louisiana has too many four-year universities.

2) The state is almost sure to cripple higher ed with across-the-board cuts.

3) Other states don't do it that way.

Nebraska, for example, is planning to INCREASE higher-ed funding. The rub is that, because of the economy, the increase will be tiny, and won't be enough to keep up with expenses. So there will be cuts.

The cuts, promises the NU system president, WILL NOT be across the board. Academic programs essential to the state's economic growth and the university's mission will be preserved at all costs.

Likewise, tuition increases will be limited.

(Note in the following story that all the budget numbers, shortfalls, etc., are for the TWO-YEAR budgeting period.)

Yeah we have too many Universities and that is part of the problem

The problem is it is hard to shut any of them down. I thonk of maybe two that there miight be a shot but still doubtful

On the other sides is the verry populal and succesful TOPS program.

There might be an effort to tighten requirements for that
