It does appear to me that perhaps the secular media has gone to new lows in reporting things Papal and Catholic.
First here are best major links examining all this nonsense

Roundup of Catholic Blogosphere Reaction to Pope’s Condom Comments
Janet Smith has a must read here What does the Holy Father really say about condoms in the new book?
The background issue here that might be quite explosive is who at the Vatican Newspaper authorized this release. It appears a good number of people have copies of the book but have respected the embargo. They are not happy Further the fact the appeared to have messed up the initial translation is irksome.
When I read the Pope's statement my reaction was what was the big deal. The Catholic Church as a general matter does not advise people how to "sin" in a more responsible manner. For instance the Church is not going to go out of its way to talk about if condoms should be used on porn sets. Like in Janet Smith's example the Church does not as general matter advise bank robbers that if they rob a bank they should use a gun without bullets. The Pope was making an interesting point and it is shame the media is representing it.
Update- I have a new post here at Catholcs Asking What Is Wrong At L’Osservatore Romano . In that post Link a very good blogs post by a Catholic with SSA. See What I've been taught about condoms
