Let me say I am not cynical about politics. It seems the thing is to hate politics and politicians and just complain complain complain.
I have never liked this attitude. When I was in High School I got involved in a local State Senate race. It was interesting because my parish (think county) was against the guy I was supporting. It was not easy but I enjoyed every minute of it. I can recall going to some catfish fundraiser and the preacher at the prayer saying something that stuck with me. That is when we demean politicians and politics we in a way demean this whole noble experiments we Americans have been doing.
I have been privileged to know a lot of politicians. It is not the easy job so many of us think it is.> In fact I amazed that people want to do it at all for all the BS they get from us. In fact most people no matter what their views do it because they have a calling to it I am convinced. If they are called to this vocation I am in no position to blast them.
That being said to be a good politician one has to have a good sense of humor. If not one will hate the people you represent. It is always them against me . Be in their shoes for a second and one can see how tempting that viewpoint is. We are their boss of course but we would never want our boss to treat us as we usually treat them.
Palin has got criticism in spades. A lot of it unfair. When John McCain picked her for the VP in the GOP I suspect she had a clue it would be tough. But she has again gotten it in spades.
When you see a politico that take all this with humor(and lets admits 99 percent of the public could not take that attitude) that is is special regardless of party or belief.
That is the reason I love her Tonight Show Appearance. See Palin Sets Phasers on Stun...On Kirk! at CMR

There's no doubt that you have to have a "thick skin" to be a politician, and how Sarah manages to keep her sense of humor is beyond me. I love her spunk and drive.
That said, I also think that any politician who takes their constituents for granted, like we've seen with those on Capitol Hill, will find out that they can only get away with that for a while...they will be shoved off the pedestal they put themselves on and the fall will be a long, hard one.
