Did Liberals Kill Battlestar Galactica?

Ok Political nerds time to get our Sci Fi Geek on

I very much like Jonah Goldberg. He is pretty rational. I want to highlight this column he wrote for Contentions How Politics Destroyed a Great TV Show

He makes some good points about past Sci -Fi but the main purpose of his piece is to examine Battlestar Galactica. Long time readers will know I am a HUGE HUGE fan of that show.

He makes some good points but in the end I must disagree. Over at NRO a conservative come to the defense and I must say I am in his corner. See Jonah & BSG

I have no problem that BSG had current political events alluded to it in it. Good Sci Fi examines contemporary moral and political questions And like good Sci Fi it does not come down on one side or the other. It makes the viewer or reader decide. It generates debate. I think on the whole BSG did this.

I think most of BSG faults had to deal with budget problems and a writers strike!!. I mean the most interesting characters were becoming the Cylons and we went a whole Season without seeing them at all.

Further though as Jonah points out early on the Cylons "had a plan" but I am not sure the writer did. I think their plan was to limp from season from to season and try to get renewed without sacrificing the integrity of the show. The Sci Fi Channel is not exactly loaded with mega bucks.

Jonah talks about the whole Suicide bomber episodea etc etc. Again I think this was a tad more balanced than he is portraying.

I spend way too much time on SciFi Channel...it's not as scary as what goes on in Washington.

Hasn't most of the space type shows dabbled in the politics of the day? I know I've noticed it with Star Trek and other such shows,in the past.

I've only seen a few of the BSG shows and they seemed really cool, but for some reason I haven't delved into it too much.

Like you said, though, since the writers strike a lot of the shows seemed to go off kilter and much of the nuance was lost along with characters that were just being developed.

Yeah BSG was really good in the early days. In fact the latter episodes were not as bad as some want to say

But again I think money and the strike caused the last year to drag. It was sort of like why are spending 3 episodes on stuff that could be done in one. It was like they were having to save money for the last two shows which meant a thousand plot lines had to be sewed up which you rally can't do in just tow shows
