See Rahm Emanuel blocking progress on immigration reform says Hispanic lobby
The problem with this is it is not just mean ole Raham Emanuel. Compare the energy that Reid and Pelosi are doing on Health Care versus how they acted on immigration reform in 2007.
Why do people think it will be different this time? They will get the same political ccover like they did last time.
See how the President himself when he was a Senator sunk immigration reform in a cynical political move.
Why are people shocked? Where were all the immigration reform supporters in 2008. Why were they not working to get McCain elected? The man took a thousand arrows and at least from the Catholic Social Justice quarters I saw very little kudos. Which is counterproductive if you want a Congress Critter to support your causes. Senator Lindsey Graham is getting it every single day and yet I see no posts and articles hardly in his defense!!
For Republicans and conservatives working for immigration reform I must say a lot of immigration reform folks really don't help us out a lot.
So people sold their souls to the devil did not really tell the folks they represented what was really going on and here we are!!
We are going to hear a lot about immigration reform the next few weeks. I am not convinced that this is not all smoke and mirrors really. I am going to do a post on this later but perhaps immigration reform supporters need to be more pragamtic and reasonable in their goals. I am not sure to be blunt that with unemployment like it is the public is going to want to deal with this at this moment. I think there is nothing wrong about being "smart" so we get something and not a big NADA again. More on that later in another post.
Also I don't think it has yet occured to some immigration reform supporters that the hidden opposition to this with in Democrat quarters is now about to be exposed. It is not just Tancredo and other "No Amnesty" GOP folks.
Add to this that Obama has already got Unions mad at him (What immigration reform before we get Card Check) and for some earthly reason has picked a fight with the Chamber of Commerce and is trying to freeze them out on various fronts.
The Chamber was a crucial ally in this fight.
Oh and I suspect we are going to see a civil war in the black Caucus over this. You think Benny Thompson that heads a important committee is going back to Delta and tell his loyal black voters that have high level of unemployment to just deal with it. Benny has made almost Tancredo like statements on this in the past that were largely ignored because it was awkward for some.
