That is the question that Inside Catholic has up today at Is anti-Catholicism dead?
It is tempting to say yes. What has often been called been called anti Catholicism that is the Know Nothing party, movements that feared the Pope in Rome would rule, the Chick Publication stuff has suffered. It is tempting to say yes.
I mean I have to think Catholics had tears in their eyes when they say the awesome reception that Pope Benedict got at the White House. Such a scene would have been unthinkable even 50 years ago. As Pope Benedict was being greeted and honored by America's finest civic religion it was breathtaking to watch. When Benedict was giving his stirring address in the shadow of the Washington Monument it did occur to some people that he Vatican's marble block contribution, also known as "The Pope Stone", enraged the Know-Nothings to the point where they stole and then destroyed it.
However it is still alive and well. Except the enemy is not paranoid Protestants but people that hate all Christianity. That is one reason when the Louisiana State Democrat party ran a stupid Know Nothing like Campaign against Catholic Governor Bobby Jindal his biggest defenders were Evangelicals and Pentecostals!!!! My largely Baptist and Evangelical neighbors were horrified that this was going on.
On that note look at the trash Mother Jones ran against Bobby yesterday at Will John McCain Make Exorcism (Literally) a Campaign Issue?
Somewhere along the line different faith communities that realized while we have difference forces were against us that wished to make us obsolete.
I suspect that many hard shell Baptist who are paying a that think the Roman Catholic belief of the real presence in the Blessed Sacrament is bladder dash are horrified by what has happen the last few weeks.
Some Evangelicals and sadly yes even some Catholics , mostly of the more progressive viewpoint, have not gotten the message of course that divided we shall fall.
But the essence of Catholicism that is the Christian message and Apostolic faith is under attack like never before. So yes anti Catholicism is very much alive.
