Have no doubt this is all a disaster. However the much maligned Foggy Bottom will score one important victory. That is victory is in the eyes of the American people.
I have very much been impressed by reading these cables of the diplomats we in the USA have working for us. They are to say a clever bunch. One conservative writer recently criticized the writing of the cables as being unprofessional like. I strongly disagree.
A informative cable does not have to read like a bland policy paper. Their entertaining style of writing in fact helps me as an average American get it.
This is seen in perhaps the most unfortunate set of dispatches leaked. Those relating to Turkey. It is unfortunate because it appears to the Turkish Government is moving Heaven and Hell to find these sources. However those cable rival anything I read in such papers as the New York Times and Washington Post in helping me get a grasp on the confusing Turkish situation.
It appears Fareed Zakaria agrees with my viewpoint. See his Time piece WikiLeaks Shows the Skills of U.S. Diplomats
