I thought it might be fun and informative to look at the Catholic communities at the schools that my football teams play. So each week we shall be looking at the Newman/Catholic Centers at universities that Louisiana Tech and LSU play
Today we have the evil Catholics of Vanderbilt. See Vanderbilt Catholic in the Diocese of Nashville.
Vanderbilt is sort of our Harvard of the SEC. All the real smart and rich folks go there. They also can squeeze a dime better than anyone in their Athletic program. The new ESPN deal which every school gets a 15 million dollar check will well be major there.
It seems to be an active community and I like how they have Eucharistic adoration everyday. Their web site with photo galleries is very nice
They also have a nice blog here that is kept to date that gives one a sense of a vibrant community. They have something called FOCUS which appears to be a great benefit. See VandyCatholic.- Radically Pursuing the Fullness Truth Since 1873!!! I like that blog title!!!! Nashville is one of those Diocese where is there seems to be a lot going on!!! In fact it seems that all three major Dioceses of Tennessee (Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville) are all on fire from what can tell.
I love the fact that the Vanderbilt Catholic community is under the Patronage of the a great modern and exciting "young" Saint Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati
This appears to be a dynamic Catholic ministry we should see more of. Please note this a private non Catholic campus. Vandy has a student population of 12,093.
A little history it was founded by one the VANDERBILTS. That is shipping and rail magnate "Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who provided Vanderbilt it's initial $1 million endowment despite having never been to the South. The Commodore hoped that his gift and the greater work of the university would help to heal the sectional wounds inflicted by the Civil War. Thus that is why their mascot is the Commodores despite not being like by the ocean.
I have been on the campus and it is very pretty. Of interest is a big painting of the Scopes Monkey Trial which is at the Law Center. To Louisiana readers the "defendant" John Scopes (that case was sort of a set up one in order for the town to get publicity and for the ACLU to get a TEST case ) later lived and died in Shreveport Louisiana. After the trial, Scopes left teaching, and went to work as a geologist for an oil company in Louisiana . I really don't think he had a connection to Vandy but the painting is cool.
Anyway the Catholic Commodores will need all your prayers because on Saturday the Tigers are hopefully going to chew them into little pieces.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
