One More Hit on Port Fourchon Louisiana and the Country Is Screwed

Articles like this should be on the front page of every major newspaper. Sad facts of Life down here is regardless of party or interest group from Business to the environmentalist no one cares. Well they might be caring soon.

Perhaps oh just perhaps some of the stimilus money should have been spent on this!!

Tip of the hat to the Dead Pelican

Here's the thing: Port Fourchon has been vulnerable for years. So has New Orleans. So has most of the state.

So why are people only paying attention now? The time to pay attention and make preparations is before a storm hits. Unfortunately, we still haven't learned that lesson, even in Louisiana, and we just keep crossing our fingers and hoping that the Big One doesn't hit (again).

I'm still shocked at the number of south Louisianans who don't have a hurricane-readiness kit. Seriously, folks, you think the time to go to Winn Dixie is when a hurricane is spinning out in the Gulf? I think this is just another manifestation (albeit on a smaller scale) of our collective denial about the dangers we face.

I'm a Northerner by birth, so I think my neighbors consider me the crazy Yankee for being so worried about hurricanes. But I tell you what -- if/when a hurricane hits my corner of SE Louisiana, I will be prepared with food, water, flashlights, and first aid supplies. And if it's a really big one, I will be safely evacuated along with my family and pets, in a location we've already pre-selected and pre-planned. :-)
