The Wild Double Life of the Famed Clarence King

Wow what a crazy story. Inside Catholic starts out the piece with

King, born in Rhode Island in 1842, was a famous geologist and explorer who became the first director of the United States Geological Survey. He was also co-founder of the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC -- a private club for those who have distinguished themselves in sciences. (And a lovely place, I might add.)
King led a very interesting life -- his talent and adventurous spirit won him fame and placed him in the top social circles of his day. Among his closest friends was Henry Brooks Adam, grandson of John Quincy Adams.
But what no one knew until after his death was that Clarence King led a double life. .........
