Only Doug Kmiec Could Make the Pelosi- Pope Meeting A Rant on Scalia!!

Good grief. Doug Kmiec has a piece up at Time magazine. Do people at Time actually review this stuff. How Doug Kmiec finds such significance in a Vatican Press Release as to the Pelosi meeting that is it is "Rome’s new direction" on judges!!!. I mean is Time magazine comfortable with this? It is absurd

Father Z has a good post on this with comments at Kmiec on Holy See’s Pelosi visit statement, Justice Scalia, duties of jurists . Also see his post as a follow up at What did Kmiec really say in the TIME article?

American Papist even brings up the point that Kmiec got the Italian trnaslation wrong!!!!

See Kmiec's epic fail in Time magazine

On the bright side I think it is becoming more apparent that Kniec will not be Envoy othe Holy See. I think if he wanted that job he would be laying a tad more low.

Update from the Corner:

Re: Not a Careful Reading? [Ed Whelan]
In support of my
speculation that the term “jurists” in the Holy See Press Office’s statement about Pope Benedict XVI’s recent meeting with Nancy Pelosi does not mean “judges” — and of my argument that law professor Douglas Kmiec’s entire essay on the statement is (for that and other reasons) misplaced — a reader calls to my attention the Pope’s December 2006 speech to participants in a meeting organized by the Union of Italian Catholic Jurists. According to my reader, the Union of Italian Catholic Jurists is the equivalent of an Italian bar association (here is its Italian-language home page).

The Pope addresses this collection of Italian lawyers as “Dear jurists” (see sixth paragraph from the end).
