Why is the Media Ignoring the Real Vatican Sex and Money Scandal?

In the last few weeks I have wondered why the media is largely ignoring a tragic episode for the Church. That is Fr Marcial Maciel Degollado and the Legionaries of Christ.

Well I think it is apparent. Again like the stories we have seen the last couple of week when you dig you find a picture of Pope Benedict dealing with the sexual abuse crisis and not an enabler.

This is a sensitive topic. Mainly because of the amount of Lay people and good priests that are in the Legionaries. This needs to be approached with a great deal of compassion for those people and pastoral care must be taken care of them. However the fact is that the many people in the Vatican seemed unaware that we had the makings fo dangerous cult on our hands.

Even the most Orthodox and "conservative" Bishops were alarmed early on which is one reason the Legionaries were banned from being in huge number of Dioceses. I am not sure what will happen to the Legionaries and their lay arm but I think they are going to have to be incorporated into a different structure with a new Charism.

How Benedict deals with this and not destory a lot of peoples faith that are in this movement is going to no doubt one of his most pressing concerns. Because to be quite frank I think most of these Pirest and lay folks are good people devoted to God.

Still there is the scandal and it must be dealt with. However again we have Pope Benedict as Pope and Cardinal on. A real bit of courage that I suspect was not easy.

Damion Thompson has the story at A vast sex and money scandal threatens the Vatican. But, once again, Ratzinger emerges as the campaigner against 'filth'
