When Will Obama Catholics Stop Being Useful Idiots

Ah Vox Nova had a post that is so well the status quo.

Let me just quote the first paragraph of the post How to Make Progress on Abortion

Now, more than ever, we are seeing the problems with the proposed solution of the American Catholic right – align with right-wing evangelicals and support the Republican party so that they can select certain judges to overturn Roe v. Wade. The problem is, like Icarus, you might fly too close to the sun and come crashing down. Here, the sun is that package of Republicans beliefs and attitudes that have no place in Catholic social teaching. So we have some Catholics defending war, torture, and an aggressive and unChristian neoconservative posture in the world. We have more Catholics embracing all aspects of the theology of individualism, relishing in subsidiarity without solidarity, pushing to purge the government from all aspects of the economy, defending materialism and consumerism, and nodding toward a preferential policy toward the rich. As long as you don yourself in the prolife shroud, everything else is permissable. More damagingly, as the Republican party disintegrates into an angry nihilistic faction, so too does Catholic discourse deteriorate. And so in the eyes of the general public, the pro-life is seen as part and parcel of a bitter and angry cultural movement that mocks social justice concerns and opposes attempts to bring healthcare for all. These people are harming the pro-life cause more than any “pro-choice” politician.

Of course one notices right off the bat that a discussion on abortion goes into numerous red herrings on a ton of different issues. That is the first sign their argument is weak. They throw so many other issues in to deflect from the supposed main point. It is almost like arguing against a anti Catholic Protestant on Catholic doctrine. You start talking about Mary and then within 30 seconds you are demanded to give responses on issues from the Spanish Inquisition to the Jews to Indulgences to confession etc etc etc. We have all been there

Of course we have the mandatory "evangelical" reference for instance.

Among certain progressive Catholics they do not note the irony of sounding like the yahoos that talked about the scary Catholics decades ago. The fact they sound like a yahoo Baptist Minister in the 50's talking about the Catholic politicos being servants of the Vatican is oblivious to them. Again As we see the first paragraph this is a general rant.

I am a Catholic Convert that used to be "Evangelical" These people are not a threat to the republic. Of course they were not seen as threat when many of them voted for Bill Clinton and Democrats. But boy get out of line and some Catholics talk about you like you are Hitler.

Again it is high Cotton the accusing others that " disintegrate into an angry nihilistic faction". This same poster just yesterday played the racism card because some disagree with the President on major policy concerns. Yet he has the gall to talk about proper Catholic political discourse!!

But getting to the main point quit being useful idiots. For all your Catholic Support of Obama where has it gotten us. Obama goes to Notre Dame and talks about common ground and everyone that does not do Catholic ejaculations to that is some right wing loon. Oh but he talked about adoption. Well goodness who is against that. But yet your influence has produced nothing.

In fact Obama will not even met with pro-life democrats to get the abortion funding out of the bill. See Pro-Ecclesia's post Obama Won't Meet With Pro-Life Democrat to Discuss Abortion, Health Care.

We pro life Republican Catholics might have our faults but goodness we hold our leadership to the fire. It seems that Obama Catholics on the pro-life issue are too much in the CYA Obama mode 24/7.

You got Pro-life Democrats that are in tough position and their response is a rant against the Republicans. Hey ok I understand when you call the White House on these concerns you are just getting elevator music but that is Not an excuse for your rage to be directed to us.

The democrats control the House and the Senate. We GOP folks for the time being are pretty much powerless. Yet instead of supporting Pro-Life Dems you are lashing out at neo cons and everything else. Has it not become apparent that despite the high expectations Obama does not give a damn what you say.

Quit being useful idiots. You helped get Obama elected to the most powerful office in the world .Time to call in some markers. You sold people on Obama it is time to produce.

James. Why are you still reading Vox Nova? That blog has totally jumped the shark. There is nothing, nothing, that Obama could do to further the pro-abortion cause that would cause even one of them to withdraw their support from him. He could sign FOCA, fund abortions in the healthcare reform, mandate euthanasia, vote for live birth abortion, repeal the Hyde Amendment, end the Mexico City policy, or promise to take his own daughter to the clinic to abort his grandchild, and they'd still be there for him, making excuses and shouting about how much worse Republicans are. They are nothing but partisan hacks trying futilely to over some thin sheet of intellectual cover to liberals who want to pretend to be Catholic and still vote Democrat.

They aren't worth anyone's time to read, much less anyone's time to write about.

Your prob right. I guess though it is often a handy exmaple of left Catholic thinking on various subjects

I used to be a Democrat. In fact, other than voting for a few local Republicans, I never voted for a Republican to be President...until this last election. I knew my vote would mean nothing, I live in Illinois and Obama had those electoral votes all locked up.

That said...I cannot tell you the disgust I feel for those Dems who supported Obama and have become so entrenched in the "man" and totally oblivious to his policies, that they will do everything and anything to support him. Even if it means going against their own principals and their own religious dogma.

This is why I've become and Independent. I can no longer associate myself with any group that will allow their politics to overtake their moral values.

There are a lot of "Useful Idiots" out there, and the sad thing is--they tarnish those who are doing their best to follow their faith according to the laws of God.

Paul et al, why the idea that VN is an Obama supporting blog? And why the diea that is exclusively leftist (in the American sense)? Again, my record doesn't show that. Not my voting record or my writing record. Call out who you like (myself included) but leave the sweeping generalities out, they do not serve the truth.

Sam, if your writing is the exception to the rule at VN, then you're just providing a little cover for the rest so that someone can make the "but it's not all partisan abortion apologies" defense. Because they have you.

Paul, would you like to offer me a blog to write at instead? Send me an offer and we'll go from there.

Blogs are cheap and easy to set up for yourself, Sam, if a jamoke like me can do it, anyone can.

You may not have heard, but I'm a bit busy to undertake a new blogging effort just now, as I am running a pro-life campaign to try to unseat an incumbent Republican state legislator.
