September 11th Never Forget- My Story

It seems there are ages in American where certain generations lose their "innocence" I used to hear this among my parents generation with the killing of JFK.

I suppose for many including myself it was 9/11.

I was just going to the Law office in Shreveport when I saw the first plane hit the World Trade Center. It never entered my mind that this could be a terrorist attack. I also seem to recall that the news people seemed to be assuming it was an accident. Sadly we learned when the second plane hit this was no accident.

I got to the office and the there was a frantic search for a flag to put out. There was none. So I made a frantic drive to the hardware store to get one. By the end of the day that store and all stores in the area had sold out. On the way back I learned that the Pentagon had been hit. I think the Pentagon pictures is what sent me over the edge. The fact we could be attacked in two cities and have a symbol of America power attacked was just too much.

Of course everyone was calling everyone. Soon though people in my town could not use our cell phones. We later find out it was not because of overload. It appears a National Security Directive went into effect because someone special was showing up.
I worked about a mile from Barksdale Air force Base and the sky was alive with helicopters.
The television were screaming where was the President!! Where is Air Force One!! I do look with some amusement that the people of Northwest Louisiana knew some 30 minutes before the nation did where the President was. He was in Bossier City at the Air Force Base.. When Air Force One flies in with a escorts of Fighters one cannot keep that a local secret. It was on the radio in minutes with people calling in saying 'I just Saw..."

That day it seemed anything could happen . On the news there was a report of suspicious package in front of the main gate at Barksdale. Just again one mile from me. My first thought was some suitcase nuclear device. That might seem silly now but at this point anything seemed possible.

Well we got past day one and then day 2 and then day 3 post 9/11. We all held our breath when the planes were allowed to fly again. That was a long day and night.

Still it was different. I became very depressed. For weeks I was depressed. It was like getting hit hard in the stomach. But we recovered and no we were not defeated.

I must add another 9/11 story or troubling postscript. I am not 9/11 truther. I don't think Bush knew or Bush allowed this to happen or Bush planned all this. Still I get a sense the Govt messed up because they did not connect the dots in time. If there was hiding anything it was that the national security of the United States had been compromised to a degree that is still unknown to the public

I base this on a friend of mine's uncle who I ate with on numerous occasion and talked too in detail and in confidence on this . A Local Dentist. You see he saw one of the terrorists in Shreveport at Lunch way before 9/11 in Shreveport . That part of the story has never really been examined and I suspect is in the 9/11 Commission private reports. There are things that I can still not talk about as to that but from what I know I have little doubt it was true. Local law enforcement that was involved on this saga gets real edgy with this when I have talked to them. When local law enforcement you know for years and drink beers with get all "No comment on you" in causal settings it sets off alarm bells to say the least.
Dr Graham has been adopted by the 9/11 truthers. But make no mistake he never thought the United States Govt was behind 9/11. He just believed that the we got caught with our pants down more than many people realize and our security was much more compromised than is known . Still his death troubles me to this day.

Thanks for sharing your story. The anniversary of 9/11 is one of those days of reflection that seems to continue to be fresh with each passing year. You can't help but remember what you were doing at that moment, the images flash in your mind as if you're replaying a movie in your head.

In my case, I was getting my grandson who was living with us, ready for pre-school. My son, who was in 6th grade was staying home sick that day. I had the Fox channel on TV, as I always did...listening as I prepared breakfast for the kids. I saw the film of the first plane hitting. I changed to other channels but they hadn't picked up the news yet, so I stayed on Fox. It made me feel very sick...and then the second one hit. I called my daughter (mother of my grandson) who was already at work (she's a high school teacher). I wasn't sure if she wanted me to send my grandson to school. By the time I reached her, the Pentagon had been hit.

We decided to send him, to give him a sense of stability and norm (which sounds odd when I say that now...how could anything be "norm" after that?)

I sat with my son on the sofa, all day, watching the news as it progressed, tears welling up in my eyes. My son seemed to be in shock, very quiet. I wondered if my other kids who were in high school would come home, but the schools remained open. My daughter said the school made an announcement, but she had not seen any of the film and was unaware of most of what had happened.

I still remember the weather, clear and sunny....just like it is today in the Chicago area.

I'll do as I always do on this anniversary...pray.

Regarding what our government knew and didn't know...I'm sure they are hiding a lot, but I don't think they had a hand in the attack. Like you said, they got caught with their pants down and instead of admitting to that so they could fix it, they choose to keep it quiet so they don't have to admit their mistakes. They're more concerned about how "history" treats their biography's as they stroke their ego's, than what is best for our country and the people of this nation. I have no doubt that they would kill anyone who tried to expose them.

Sorry for the long comment. I got carried away. :-(

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It is very powerful and a lot of people do need to hear it. It is sad at how easily we as a country have forgotten.

Mary Ellen and James,

Thanks for posting your stories. Let me add a couple of words about mine.

After 9/11, my small office in Lafayette received an envelope with white powder in it.

It was not anthrax, but a hoax. Thank God!

The man who did it, Stephen Michael Long, was caught and convicted.

The US Attorney specifically wanted me to testify because in my statement to the FBI, I recalled how we prayed the rosary for our health and safety.

As it turns out, I will probably have to testify again! Long's appeal for a retrial was recently granted by the Fifth Circuit.

James,

About our government's involvement:

I don't believe our government participated in planning, carrying out, or facilitating in any way the attacks.

But, like many people, I do believe that it could have been prevented. And, now the cover-up is on.
