I think these Louisiana political analysts hit this race on the head. If we had a President McCain in Office perhaps Melancon would have more of a chance,.
With opinion polls showing him as many as 20 points in the lead, this fall's race for re-election is U.S. Sen. David Vitter's to lose, Pearson Cross, UL Lafayette political science professor, said.
A host of other candidates, including Lafayette businessman Mike Spears, entered the race for U.S. Senate during qualifying last week. Few are well-known outside their own communities and aren't given much of a chance of ousting Vitter.
Neither is Vitter's primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, who chose not to seek re-election to the 3rd Congressional District in order to run against Vitter.
"He could disown the Democratic Party and disown the President. And I don't know if that would be enough" to beat Vitter, R-Metairie, said Bernie Pinsonat with Southern Media and Opinion Research.
It's a tough time to be a Democrat running for office, Cross said.
There's a great deal of animosity for President Barack Obama and the Democrats right now because of the economy, health care reform, the stimulus package and the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Pinsonat said.
More than 70 percent of white voters in Louisiana want the Republican party to control Congress, he said.
"It's not about David Vitter. It's about Obama and the national Democrats," Pinsonat said. From the offshore drilling moratorium to cap and trade, "most of what Obama has done is very unpopular in Louisiana."....................."Most people think this race is not going to be much of a race," Pinsonet said
