Illegal Immigration and The GOP Wisconsin 08 Primary Voter

I am still looking at the exit poll numbers as to illegal immigration and the Republican voter during the primary season. Last night we had Wisconsin.

The silence by the media on these exit polls numbers is quite puzzling. For such a issue that gets so much attention there seems to be a truly lack of curious interest to see what the Republican voters thinks about this on a state by state basis. Why is that?

Let me say as to some conservative media that is very much " anti immigration reform" there might be a valid reason. That is the average Republican voter is not nearly as hardline as often portayed.

Let us look at Wisconsin via the CNN exits.

Last night the Hardline Deport them all viewpoint took one of its hardlest hits. Even harder than Florida.. Here are the numbers:
Path to Citizenship
(32%)
Temporary Worker
(27%)
Deport Them
(39%)

As to McCain and Huckabee and their Voters

Huckabee-
Pathway 36% Temp Worker-34% Deport-37%

McCain-
Pathway 58% Temp-58% Deport-53%

In my experience people that put down "Temp Worker" or have that viewpoint are also putting aspects of Pathway into their thought process.

McCain who in a three man race got 25 percent of the deport them all vote now gets 53 percent. What does this show?

Well again it shows that even among people that hold the hardline view they are not especially tied to it. For instance this issue does not hold the same intense feelings as lets say abortion.

Huckabee has been able to quite frankly muddy the waters as to his position. Even though he has gone to the right it is not a huge part of campaign. He also seems to indicate that he has his on view of what these words and phrases mean and seems to like the Pence Touchback plan. Thus he he getting a healthy share of Pathway way and other groups.

I further think that this shows in a Catholic Heavy state(39% of last nights Republican Voters) they are not very keen on the Tancredo approach.

Also we again see that Huckabee Evangelical base seems to have a healthy segment that is not keen on it either. Though Huckabee did get 26% of the Catholic vote last night, this evangelical pro compromise position has been seen in Southern States as to a large segment of his voters.

Now is the issue hot here? Well it is not as hot as I suppose South Carolina but it has been in play.

My personal opinion is that we Republicans must tone down the rethoric on this issue and come to a reasonable compromise that protects our borders, our economic interest , and represent what is fair and just about our party. There is disagreement in the party and we must look at this issue with new eyes and with the best spirit of compromise.
