Catholic in the Public Square has must read for Catholics of voting age here at Joe Feuerherd vs. The Catholic Bishops . I think this defeats some of the myths that are going around. I shall have a Huckabee related posted sometimes later to night/early Monday that is Huckabee related and shows another example to ass to the ones mentioned.
A few thoughts. Some people try to bring in tow issues to justify voting for people that are are not Pro-life/anti abortion. That is the Death Penalty and now the Iraq war. The above article touches on these issues but a few thoughts.
As to the Death Penalty and voting for Federal officials.Often there is one obvious fact that is never mentioned. Most of the action regarding the Death Penalty is on the state level. States are free to prohibit the Death Penalty is they wish. Conversely states Like Louisiana that tries to ban abortion can pass legislation till the cows come home. but it gets no one because of the courts. Hence the importance of supporting Federal officials that are likely to appoint and confirm Judges that will limit that.
As to Iraq. I keep seeing things like the "Vatican is against the war in Iraq" and the "Catholic Church supports an immediate withdrawal of US forces". Not exactly!!!!!. In fact the latest statement from the US Bishops indicates that we are way past deciding if our initial entry was just or not. Now we must deal with the ethics of withdrawal and with that comes all sort of factors such as making sure our exit leaves a stable Govt. The Vatican has been very very careful about talking how and when US troops should withdraw. Furthermore it is evident that we shall be having a slow withdrawal starting very soon as evidenced by what is leaking out. This was one reason for the sure because the start of the withdrawal was envisioned.
Lastly as to McCain. I found it curious that the fact that the person likely to get the nomination for the GOP ,JOhn McCain, really stuck his neck out for Comprehensive immigration reform. He was praised by a good many Catholic organizations. I do wonder why he is not being a tad more rewarded for that by some Catholic groups.
