A Great Resource to Bring Sacred Music to the Mass(Yes the Regular one)

Poor Pope Paul the VI.

I think a Lot of Catholic Bloggers really are too negative on this man. He is sort of treated like the Jimmy Carter of Popes or if that is too harsh the President Herbert Hoover of Popes. Herbert Hoover, a good President had the depression happen on his watch while Paul the VI had all this Catholic Chaos occur on his watch. Both are judged too harshly at times I feel. Hoover that is Jimmy Carter by the way can never be judged to harshly:). Maybe one day, I will go into Pope Paul the VI and some of his accomplishiments. This post is about one small thing he did.

Never say nothing good came out of Auburn Alabama. Despite having "that team" located there , I located this wonderful resource that was produced by a Catholic Church in "that town" free of charge so he can be distributed widely. Sadly I don't think it ever was.

That is Jubilate Deo- A a "personal gift" of Paul VI to Catholic Bishops of the world and the heads of religious orders, April 14, 1974 as issued by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship.

It is the minimum Gregorian chant repertoire for every parish. It can all be downloaded in booklet form. As you can see at the link it can be downloaded in many forms.

This is from the introduction page(download PDF booklet) and is the message of Pope Paul the VI through the above mentioned congregation:

Voluntati Obsequens
Letter to the Bishops on the Minimum Repertoire of
Plainchant
This minimum repertoire of Gregorian chant
has been prepared with that purpose in mind: to
make it easier for Christians to achieve unity and
spiritual harmony with their brothers and with the
living traditions of the past. Hence it is that those
who are trying to improve the quality of
congregational singing cannot refuse to Gregorian
chant the place which is due to it. And this becomes
all the more imperative as we approach the Holy
Year of 1975, during which the faithful of different
languages, nations and origins, will find themselves
side by side for the common celebration of the
Lord….
In presenting the Holy Father's gift to you,
may I at the same time remind you of the desire
which he has often expressed that the Conciliar
constitution on the liturgy be increasingly better
implemented. Would you therefore, in collaboration
with the competent diocesan and national agencies
for the liturgy, sacred music and catechetics, decide
on the best ways of teaching the faithful the Latin
chants of "Jubilate Deo" and of having them sing
them, and also of promoting the preservation and
execution of Gregorian chant in the communities
mentioned above. You will thus be performing a new
service for the Church in the domain of liturgical
renewal. The contents of this booklet may be
reproduced free of charge

How Wonderfull.

I am glad that the Classical Roman Mass is coming back to wider use. However, for most of us the regular form of the Mass we attend today will be the one we attend all our lives. The purpose of the MP is that it affects also how we pray and celebrate this Mass too. I am not advocating throwing out all the modern music. Even though some pieces do need to be thrown out. But the Church intended as we can see here that this be part of our tradition too.

Anyway great resource. At this point let me give all Catholic in the Louisiana a reminder to mark their Calenders for this event.

W
hat a wonderful event to come to if you are in Louisiana or the Ark-La-Tx region. For those out of town this would be a fun and productive overnight trip for a group in your Parish. I am a big believer in Catholics in the Louisiana area supporting each other as to events like this. Excitement in one Diocese flows over to another one. Plus, often we move to these various Dioceses. Just ask all the New Orleans people in Shreveport still living here after hurricane Katrina.

If out of towners come a trip could be combined with the numerous Christimas light festivites or other fun activities that are in the area this time of year.

Father Mangum is a wonderful priest. Please take a good look at the whole Cathedral Schola Cantorum page for the Cathedral. I hope too see more of this wonderful pro active work through out Louisiana and the country. I am proud to see this happening in my Diocese. May God give people the grace to take advantage of it and duplicate it.
