Going On A Catholic Scavenger Hunt In Washington DC

I am going to start my posts on American Catholic History, Americanism and other things hopefully tomorrow. If I can finish a project tomorrow I intend to start that up. This article from Catholic Online seemed apt entitled Mixing religion and politics: Faith symbols tucked into power capital.

I think all Americans should go to Washington DC several times in their life. It really is a great deal on a vacation. If you go schedule it out. Distances there are deceiving. One can't just be bop around the National Mall quickly . IT is really big.

I think finding the Catholic history of a city one is visiting is pretty fun. It is one thing I like to do. If one goes to DC going to places like the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception , the John Paul the II center, Georgetown, and Catholic University is a must. Just make sure you plan time for it because none of that is right off the Mall but it is just a metro line away.

Anyway this article gives just a slight glimpse of the Christian and Catholic history of DC. Yes despite the History Channel conspiracy tv shows , D.C is not all some Masonic plot. The Catholic presence in DC is not just history but is active today.

In Statutory Hall in Congress each State can put two people in there to represent them.In statutory hall according to the article we see Blessed Damien de Veuster, Hawaii; Blessed Junipero Serra, a Spanish Franciscan in California; Jesuit Father Eusebio Kino of Arizona; Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette for Wisconsin, although he is not technically from the state; Mother Joseph, a Sister of Charity, for Washington state; and Carroll, a Catholic layman from Maryland, cousin of the nation's first Catholic bishop, Archbishop John Carroll.

Good read.

Catholic culture gives Washington neighborhood 'Little Rome' identity-

This is the Wilki Article on Brookland, Washington, D.C. that is called Little Rome.
Also in this area is the President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home National Monument which is pretty interesting.
