I keep seeing this often. WOULDN"T IT BE GREAT TO HAVE MARRIED PRIESTS. They would bring so much to the Church and no doubt because he would be married just like us.
Now I am not denying some things that married Clergy bring. However I think is slightly folly based on my experience on both sides of the fence of these dreams of Catholic Nirvana.
First hey we have married DEACONS in the Church. A WHOLE TON OF THEM!! They are involved in all sort of important jobs in the Church. Are you using them? Is the fact they are married been the dramatic change that made everything wonderful? Did you go to him for marriage counseling and because he was married find the perfect fix?
Let us now go to the wives themselves. If one thing Catholics can smell that is FREE LABOR!! They missed the good ole days where we had so many Priests and Nuns we could send our kids to school for peanuts. Where there were so many Priests you could pick a convenient Mass Time from dawn to dusk!! Where we had Priest and Religious to serve us from birth till we had to go to one of those NUN run retirement homes. It was the greatest social welfare system ever DEVISED!!!
I think Catholics realize they are going to get two for the price of one. Now what is missing of course is a lot of Minister's wives hate this ,hate living in a bubble, and yeah there is some incredible anger. It is not all ROSES.
Also and I have seen this in the Episcopal Church you will be quite amazed how often the wife becomes of some controversy. It is not all Cary Grant and Loretta Young in a real live version of the Bishop's Wife.
Oh but we will have Priests with children!!! He will understand!! I have to tell you having married Clergy has not it seemed cured the divorce rate over in Protestant land nor made everyone in the Church Dr Spock. However your children will be amused because the old adage is often true. Their kids are PURE HELL RAISERS and boy they were fun for me to hang around with when I was a kid.
So there are benefits and not so great benefits. Just saying Married Clergy is not the magic cure all to everything. The problems we have run deeper and I am afriad Married Priest would be like giving an asprin to kill the cancer. You feel better for a bit but the Cancer is still still eating away. But hey the Fever is gone for a while.
