Rod has a interesting post here at Pews vs. standing: an Orthodox controversy
I don't know a lot about this topic. Rod looks at it from an Orthodox viewpoint. He also states that Roman Catholics mostly stood but pews in Catholic Church was mostly a effect of the Reformation. Is this correct? I am not sure.
I do know that for a significant number of Protestant Churches "Pew rents" were a important part of the Church's income. Maybe that is how it started.
