It should be noted the early Baton Rouge Bus Boycott (that was really what spurned the later better known ones) was successful because African Americans came to together and pooled their automobiles.
Control the transit and you control the populace. This struck me in D.C. Why are there no huge rallies that could get out of control and people rampaging and hooting and hollering during the night and for days?
One reason is the awesome transit system they have. If you are D.C. one notes around the Mall it is very un car friendly. Their Mass transient system is wonderful But when I was there I noticed that a lines of lines shut down pretty early into the evening going out and from D.C. to Maryland I think there is a purpose for that.
Regardless it is interesting to see how the automobile is linked to the Civil Rights movement.
