Republican will Never Stop Abortion- They just Want the Votes!!

One often hears "Republicans and Conservatives will never do nothing about Abortion- They just want to use it to get votes" The implication is that there is a plot. That Republicans will never "eliminate" abortion or take efforts to overturn Roe V Wade so they can always get the anti abortion vote.

Now one hears this from both Democrats and frustrated conservative Pro-lifers. Now this is all silly when one thinks about it. The Republican Party has never been so organized and of one mind to pull such a feat off. Ever since President Lincoln and the Republican Party got the support to "Quell the troubles" in the South , truly keeping this herd of cats together and of one mind has been a difficult task.

The fact that this allegation is trumpeted without one reference to meeting, a memo or the such is telling. It also I might add I think denigrates the work of a lot of committed Pro-lifers. One would have to believe that people from Reagan. to Henry Hyde, to Justice Alito, to Governor Huckabee, to President Bush are all IN ON IT!!!

Anyway Catholics In the Public Square has a good response to the What have you done for us lately Crowd at Countering the "GOP / Bush 'duped' Pro-Lifers" Smear . He has recently re posted this. Note he does not even mention our Pro-life efforts in Foreign Affairs and at the UN. Something the Vatican is very appreciative of by the way.

  1. I don't think there is a plot (except on the spiritual level), so much as conflicting incentives. There is an incentive at election time to pander to us in order to get our votes, and then there is an incentive the rest of the time to perpetuate the issue for future use. I first got involved in this fight 30 or so years ago and have thought many times that we had turned the corner. When in 2000 we finally got a Republican president with a Republican House and Senate they ran out of excuses. That opportunity was squandered and now we have a Democratic congress for the foreseeable future.

  2. David I guess the problem is even with a Republican House and Senate I think thereis a ceiling of what we can do till we change the Court. THe fact is that 2000,2002 , and 2004 cycle set the foundation for us getting ROberts and Alito in that we think are our best bets.

We have passed other legislation suring that period.

I dont think we did that bad with how thin our najorities were and the fact that there is significant minoruty of pro-Choice Republicans we have to deal with mainly form the Northeast and West
