I really like what The Bob Catholic Show said on his last entry called The Australian, an Italian, and causality.
He says in part:
"To say we need no more theologians, or that theologians should stop being theologians, is like saying we need no more Catholics! Every Catholic, by their baptism, is a theologian in that they seek communion with God himself through their faith and reason. (This is quite apart from the academic discipline we call Theology.) Bishop Manning is heavily coming down on the side of orthopraxis which so dominates theological ideas of today. Rather the Bishop’s question should be: why is there so little theologising today?"
So true. I think I am going to start using this blog to try to grasp the insights of the great Doctor and Saint of the Church St Thomas Aquinas. I need to start having these basic concepts as a part of my reality. We might start that today or tomorrow on this blog.
This quote reminded me of a great Post that Father Z posted surrounding the Pope's visit a few months back to venerate the bones of the St Augustine. He recounts this run in with then Cardinal Ratiznger. He says in part"
Years ago in the hallway of the Palazzo del Sant’Uffizio where I was working, just after the release of the CDF document on the Vocation of the Theologian, I ran into Cardinal Ratzinger. I often had the chance to chat with him and ask him questions and he was very kind and helpful. On this occasion, I said that I had read the document. He asked what I thought of it. (!) I said I wasn’t entirely satisfied. He looked at me with a bit of surprised and asked me why. I said, "You never really say who the theologican is." He thought about this for a while and said, "Why don’t you tell us?" (!!) "You study at the Augustinianum [the Patristic Institute across the square from the Palazzo]. You are reading the Fathers. Who would Augustine say the theologian is?" Bammo. I had the topic of my first thesis from Joseph Ratzinger.
That major CDF document that I read years ago is located here and is called INSTRUCTION ON THE ECCLESIAL VOCATION OF THE THEOLOGIAN . I might go back and read this today
