Louisiana Citizens Need to Get Real About Vitter

As I posted yesterday, I am supporting Sen Vitter during his crisis. Maudie in Mandeville has a blunt piece echoing some of my same views.

Someone asked me this today on my LSU football board. I post it because this seems to be a common line of attack today.
just curious, when Vitter says God has forgiven him, is this something he knows first hand? Like do you think he is able to speak to God and get a response he can then pass on to the people of Louisiana? What if God knows everything and what if God says No, I'm not forgiving you because I know in your heart you are only asking for forgivness because you got caught, not because you have suddenly developed a moral revelation?
Just curious on how we are to believe this BS.

I responded that if he went to confession he was forgiven. But to be honest, that is not the issue. Again this public voyeurism over a sin of the flesh that occured in the 90's is troublesome to me. To be quite honest, there are other major concerns than if Sen Vitter performed a proper act of contrition in a confessional. In fact I am beginning to see the people response to this as much more sinful than Vitter's act.

So if he really felt remorse for his family , his church and the people of Louisiana that he has shamed, he should do the right thing and resign. That would go a long way to convince me he is serious about being sorry and not about doing what he needs to do in order to stay in office.

OK let's stop this nonsense. As a Catholic , I will support David with my prayers. However, I don't feel we Louisiana folks have the luxury of sitting back and deciding if David Vitter is truly sorry for having sex with a escort in the 90's and made either a perfect or imperfect act of contrition. I know it is a lot of fun to sit in moral judgement of people, but we don't have time for that. As I stated above, looking at the forums, blogs, and comment sections there is sin and it has little to do with Vitter himself. When a person fails, the Lord does not give us permission to run a man down and engage in every little rumor. He also doesn't give us carte blanche to talk about how our fellow brother in Christ is scum and his contrition is "bs". I don't think there is a internet exception to that either. If Senator Vitter was "banging" Congressional aides in his office or wawe had evidence that this was recent conduct and contuining that is a different story perhaps. Till then though don't publish rumor unless you would want your name associated with it on the front pages of the New Orlean's Picayune.

We have important votes coming up on Iraq. We have indications that AQ is about to do a major attack on us. We have Federal judges we are still trying to get confirmed.

Also right now, with Louisiana in such a postion as she is, I really don't feel like starting at the back of the line as to senority in the Senate. Senority really matters with a state like Louisiana because of our weak congressional delegation. Ever wonder, why we continue to have a huge dead zone off our coast caused by runoff of fertilizers from up north? Ever wonder why the Florida and other states get huge Federal funding for enviromental projects as we continue to watch Louisiana lose a acre of land a hour? Ever wonder why we don't get our fair share of offshore revenues even though we help fuel this country? It is because of a weak congressional delegation. A delegation that could get very much weaker next year. We still have not recovered from losing the Senior Status of John Breaux and Bennett Johnston.

I am not sure Louisiana losing any more power , status or influence is worth having David resign because we can all feel he is truly sorry. People at times get too wrapped up into politicans. The problem we have in Louisiana is not that our politicans have a lot of power in DC, it is that they don't have enough.
