I and not old enough to recall parades being the norm for major U.S. Civic holidays. There might be a Veterans days parade that is lightly attended but that is it. The one exception from my youth was Columbus Day. However Fourth of July parades one saw in the movies? Never seen it in person.
However in Louisiana Statewide MLK might be bucking that trend for a rather unique reason. See here.
