In the UK Catholic Priests Sex Abuse Scandals Sell Better Than Protestant Sex Abuse Scandal

From the UK PRESS 'Pervert priest faces 80 years in US jail says UK Oxford Times. Except of course he was not a Priest but a Baptist minister!!

Worcester Park baptist minister admits child sex attacks from Your Local Guardian at least gets the faith right.
However lets look at the other headlines in the UK. Umm there are none!! Go GOOGLE UK NEWS IT yourself. It seems for the most part that UK media is just interested in Catholic Priests cases dealing with abuse. Other faiths not so much. So much for perhaps "its all about protecting the children"

The Associated Baptist Press has been following this story since the arrest and has a story on it here at
British Baptist minister pleads guilty to child molestation in Va.

Among the tragic details we learn:
Dando, 46, was accused of sexually abusing two boys, starting when they were ages 7 and 8, over a period of five years during visits to a family friend in the United States. Police say the first alleged victim, now 21, came forward in December, and after investigation the first victim’s now-teenaged brother claimed abuse under similar circumstances.......

Fairfax County officials said one of the victims claimed that Dando molested him by touching his genitals on 50-60 different occasions between ages 7 and 12. In the hearing, Fairfax County prosecutors also said that Dando had admitted, under questioning, to touching young boys in the United Kingdom in a similar fashion.

Dando resigned as pastor of Worcester Park Baptist Church in suburban London after he was arrested July 24 in Oakton, Va. He had served from 2005-2007 as a volunteer executive assistant to David Coffey, a fellow British Baptist who was then president of the Baptist World Alliance.

HOWEVER IT GETS WORSE
Back to the "Pervert priest" headline story while having a misleading headline gives a lot of important details.

Dando was a minister with the Orchard Baptist Fellowship, which meets at Cooper School, Bicester, between 1995 and 2006, and a former governor at Bicester’s Kings Meadow School.

Dando, who most recently lived in Surrey, resigned from as a senior minister at Worcester Park Baptist Church in Surrey after he was arrested in the United States in July.

He was also removed from membership of the Boys’ Brigade in which his wife Janice is a vice-president.

In a statement, Bicester Orchard Baptist Fellowship said: “It was with a great sense of sadness that Orchard Baptist Fellowship received the new that Robert Dando has pleaded guilty to four counts of sexually molesting two boys when on visits to the USA.

“We are deeply saddened that someone in a position of trust could harm vulnerable children in such a way.

“We are seeking to support all those in the local area who knew Robert Dando as minister and have been affected by this news.”

The church said that if any allegations had been made in the UK it would have been immediately reported to police and social services.

Dando, who was also a former magistrate in Banbury between 2003 and 2008, was also understood to have been a member of the Oxfordshire Family Panel, which deals with child care and access proceedings.............

Well is that the end of the story? The local UK Baptist establishment is basically saying we KNEW NOTHING. Maybe they did not. However one has a huge feeling that his crimes did not just occur on visits to the USA. Further if the UK Baptist are anything like the American Baptist people should be taking with a big grain of salt that no one knew nothing.

This is bad on several levels.

First looking at the news coverage in the UK it is apparent now as well as then most reporting is reserved for Catholic cases of clergy abuse.

Related to that it helps the myth that these cases are particular to the Catholic Church based on such theories as celibacy , out of touch Bishops, and particular Catholic structures of authority.

In other words the much wider problem of protecting children is not being addressed.

  1. Yup. You've said it, but let me just reiterate it: Dando previously served as executive assistant to the president of the Baptist World Alliance. This is the top assistant to a very top dog. This story should have gotten way more coverage. But of course, so should a great many more . . . StopBaptistPredators.org

  2. I think the reason these stories don't get covered is because it strikes too close to home to the average lay person that chose to ignore the warning signs or in fact stayed quiet as perhaps they were transfered
