The LA Times took note of Obama's actions against Cao in New Orleans here at Republican Rep. Joseph Cao reaps the rewards of bipartisanship; Obama thanks him the Chicago way
Now missing in that article of course is at final house vote on the Health Care bill Cao voted no because of abortion concerns.
Further I am not totally sure Cao would have voted yes the first time if his vote would have made a difference. He waited till the last possible minute when he voted yes for the Health Care Bill which indicates to me when it was apparent it was going to pass he got understandable ok from House leadership to vote the way he did. I mean that is the reality of his district.
Still Cao has been bipartisan in many matters.
However now it is time for political reality. The Democrats can't afford to lose this House District again especially with this cycle. Further though no one will say it out in the open many democrats in New Orleans think it is insanity that a black person does not have that seat.
In the background to is the fact the the Dem running against Vitter is not exciting the Democrat base. That is not helpful to what appears to be a strong challenge coming from Democrat Fayard in the Lt Governors race. That race is important in the whole scheme of things because well who knows what Governor Bobby Jindal might do in the future. For Fayard to have a chance she has to have strong African American turnout in New Orleans.
So here comes President Obama to the rescue!!
Now it is true Cao is not as conservative as many people in the GOP would like. However a Conservative will never have this seat. NEVER. Cao in many ways is as good as it will get.
Further Cao is good for certain factions of conservatives as to his Pro-life stance (his opponent is pro choice) and what has not received the coverage it should his activism against oppressive Communist regimes. Further if you are concerned about trade issues Cao seems to be good on that.
The question is where is the Catholic Social Justice folks that are pontificating all the time. They should be a hundred percent behind Cao. He come from a Catholic Social Justice Jesuit background and he often walks the talk.
Further Cao represents a dynamic and important part of the American Catholic Church that is often overlooked. That is the Vietnamese who have maintained their strong strong Catholic ID.
Cao also is open to immigration reform.
One gets a sense that certain folks might not want to upset certain allies in Democrat circles and thus they are AWOL. That is really a shame.
No talk of Cao on among the supposed bipartisan Catholic United crowd. It appears their sister organization the Matthew 25 network is silent too.
It is true Cao is down right now in the polls. See this breakdown. However he is in striking range. I think in this political climate many of those undecided folks will break for Cao. If turnout is low in New Orleans Cao has a real chance.
It does seem that a perfect coaltion between Conservative pro-lifers and lets say the more left Catholics should be forming. Perhaps it shall. However time is running out.
