In these troubled times for some conferences one can just bend over it and take it or use it as an opportunity. Karl Benson is an example of the first class. I hate to say this because he helped the WAC through troubled times before. However now it appears he is just going to REACT and not take the initiative.
I was listening to Fox and Company on ESPN 97.7 yesterday and they had a portion of the news conference. DEPRESSING.
Now the WAC in many ways have now got a second chance of life. The Mountain West left Boise State at the altar. Sometime I do wonder where Benson's (a Boise Alumni) loyalties lie. Needless to say his performance was not inspiring at the WAC news conference. Perhaps that is why I cannot find a link to the audio currently on the WAC homepage.
Now my interest is Louisiana Tech that is at the very Eastern part of the WAC.

It is a tough relationship because of travel and distance. Many Tech fans would like to move to Conference USA.
The Commish , though saying Tech was a valued partner, would not be standing in the way of such a move if offered. Wow being proactive there to save the conference.
He said of course there might be opportunities to expand into central time zone teams but then he said that of course a conference would like to perhaps reduce their geographic boundaries!!! Who do think he is talking about? You can bet it is not Hawaii but Louisiana Tech.
It would seem a Commissioner worth his salt would see this as an opportunity. Many schools are going to be left out in the cold. Good schools. Why does not the WAC consider adding perhaps some of this TEXAS schools back into the fold. Is it not a good idea to have more Central Time Zone viewers!! If this happened (lets say Baylor can't get their big brothers Texas A @ M and Texas to include them in a deal) then is there potential? There are other possibilities.
Such moves I would suspect also set the foundation for Louisiana Tech(a valued partner) of staying in the WAC since fans would have rivals closer to them. A foundation would be set for more media markets. Is that not what the other Conferences are thinking. Benson seems to have the opposite viewpoint in his heart.
With it appearing that Boise State will stay in the WAC there is a brief window of time now to make this an opportunity. The question is will Benson make the most of it.
So what is his plan. Is it to take advantage of his the geographic footprint or is it to constrict the boundaries of the WAC. He said both were options yesterday!! He also said adding Non Div 1 schools that want to become full fledged DIV I schools was an option. I assume these are schools out West? Regardless there then to be a plan of action and right now I am not seeing one.
