There has been an attempt over the last month by those on the left of trying t make some political hay of this spill on the federalism front.
The argument goes something like this.
"Look at Bobby Jindal that anti no Federal Govt, No Federal Aid, etc Governor crying ans asking for help from the Federal Government. What a whiner and what a hypocrite".
Now of course this is nonsense. Jindal has never been "anti Federal Government" or anti Federal aid for certain things. He believes in a healthy Federalism but a healthy Federalism does make someone an extreme John Calhoun.
Also for outsiders they don't seem to understand the State and Federal dynamics as they all intersect on the Coast. You have Federal Fisheries laws, wetland laws, and laws relating to the oil and natural gas industry. Also the fact that this spill occurred in Federal waters seems to pass people by.
However here is a good example of how Louisiana as a political matter cannot even if wanted just handle it on their own. See Louisiana response to Gulf of Mexico oil spill obstructed by BP and federal agencies, state officials say
