Some Catholics Hate When Catholics Make Money By Serving The Church

I saw this comment today. I will not link it and I will edit so not to bring this particular person mentioned into the discussion. It is really not important to the main point

**** *** *** sells T-shirts, coffee mugs, hats, mousepads, Buttons/or pins, bumper stickers. I’m sorry, but it’s hard to take someone serious that is out to promote himself and seeks self glorification. Also, its’ a lobbyist site. Since when are lobbyists not working for someone in the political field? Eventually politics takes over, and if the t-shirts and bumper stickers arent enough to convice you, then I don’t know what ever would be.

Now the above guy is a cradle Catholic that loves his faith and has incorporated it in his life's work. He is does not work for a Diocese or is on official Church staff. He has to pay the bills.

Now as a Convert to the Catholic Faith it took me a while to pick up on some of this hostility to this. As a former Baptist I am used to lay non ordained folks doing good work time in service for the Lord and do not think it is a scandal they charge for books and such to feed their family.

Yet some Catholics on both the progressive left and the right (traditionalist) hate it!!!

I think this partly because they are used to tons of nuns, brothers, priests, and such doing all this for peanuts.

I laugh when I hear Catholics say we need married Priests.

Good Grief Catholic compared to Protestants are TIGHT with money. Look at the lay staff from music to adult education at a big size Protestant Church and compare it a similar size Catholic Church.

Catholics still want to pay slave wages. Married priests? Hell we Catholics expect the CCD director at a huge Church to work for free. I can not imagine what happens if my fellow Catholics had to pay a priest and his family a livable wage. THERE WOULD BE SHOCK.

Both groups seems to hate with a passion when former Protestant Clergy that become Catholics do this. Heaven help us if they were alive when St Augustine was around. Since he was not a cradle Catholic they would have told him to mind his place and just speak up when he like 80 or something. That darn Augustine and bringing his former non Catholic ideas and polluting the place. Can't these converts shut up. I guess they perhaps they would have given St Paul a pass though just years before he was persecuting them.

I sort of understand where they are coming from. There is one Church and one authority. We don't want some charismatic Catholic lay person doing some sort of bizarre Catholic "Left Behind" series nonsense and leading tons astray. However the Church takes all this in stride

In reality I don't think it is the money but they are poed these people that have a following are not talking about what the complainers think is important.

On the left it is why for instance Scott Hahn is not talking about the need for Health Care for all. On the traditionalist side it is why is why Hahn is not talking about the Latin mass 24/7. I can pick numerous other people that both sides seems to hate .

Needless to say all the folks on EWTN are really suspect when they sell books and charge speaking fees.

So a former Protestant minister that educates the faithful and sells some some tapes is all SELF PROMOTION and yet Father Mcbrien or Father Reese that is also giving their two cents on every subject under the sun is ok it appears.

Again Catholics are used to free labor and when someone charges a dime or trys to promote their stuff there is all this talk of SELF GLORIFICATION.

The only exception appears to be if you are a lay Professor from Notre Dame or some place like that then it is all right.
