My last gripe about the mascot situation. Granted, I am utterly exhausted by conflict fatigue, but if we have to have a replacement mascot, I think we could (and probably will) do much worse than Adm. Ackbar. The bottom line is that if we choose a bear or a horse, in 10 years we will be the Mississippi Bears/Horses/ Etc. At least Ackbar is organic, from the students. Not foisted on us by the administration.
Heck, when they took Col Reb from the sidelines in 2003 it wasn't because of some racist or plantation owner imagery, the reason given was that he needed to be updated. That is how we got the whole Rebel Bruiser fiasco (http://img.coxnewsweb.com/B/00/59/02/image_202590.jpg). If Col. Reb was racist, how was an updated Col. Reb who was apparently questioning his orientation any less racist? It was only sometime after 2003 when the chancellor referred to him as an old, white plantation owner that doomed his fate. This despite the fact our historian emeritus, Dr. Sensing stated the character was based on a blind black man who was a staple on campus from the 30s until the late 50s.
Sorry to vent and/or ramble. I realize outside North Mississippi this is viewed with great amusement.
I think it doubtful that Ole Miss will Lose the "rebels" and I don't think they should
I think what has cuaght a lot of us by suprise is that this year tther seemed to be no "outrage" over this outside the University so it appears to be internal
Plus both Ole Miss and the NCAA make a pretty penny off "Rebels" merchandise. I hope that ends this endd it. I can;t imagine le Mis would actually get rid of teh rebels mascots
I concur over the "outrage" aspect. It's like if tomorrow everyone at Vandy became outraged over the Vanderbilt Commodore. I haven't been a student there in over a decade, but did go to undergrad and post-grad there during the flag flap. I never thought there would be any contention over the mascot. I thought Dixie would be the most logical next battleground. I have no idea how it is still around. But having a lengthy history with the school have no doubt Rebels will be gone in the next 10 years. Unfortunately.
If you didn't know, like the Saints, the Rebs built their basketball stadium over a cemetery. However, the Rebs built it over a Confederate mass trench tomb. Maybe why we have never been that successful in bball.
