So lets talk Sex and Politics on Opinionated Catholic.
Get Religion looks at a curious article that the Washington Post ran.
See You got your op-ed in my news story. Basically the argument is since men sometimes cheat on their spouses with other men that we should have gay marriage. Problem solved and thus heartache avoided.
Whenever this "bisexual" issue comes up I can't help but note that most people are not living in reality. In fact it seems a scandal that this line of argument is not attacked more. I think it is not attacked because of political considerations.
Gay advocate groups often say the represent "gay, bisexual, and transgendered" people. But notice how often that "bisexual" flys out the window.
A Senator is caught in a bathroom with another man and he is labeled a homosexual. A huge television Evangelist is exposed by a man he pays for sex. He is then called a homosexual.
In a sense we seem to be living in two different worlds. Many of the gay men I know think bi sexual are just fakes.
Of course in my view the term bisexual is problematic. I quite agree with the Church that labeling a person based on sexual orientations is in many cases a mistake.
However Father Scalia in this excellent talk makes the real point. That many people have different varying degrees of same sex attraction for many different reasons.
I worked in the legal field for some time and in different areas this case came up. From people that had same sex experience in prisons, to those that caught in public parks in sting operations in parks, to the marriage situation.
In most of these cases I had real doubts that most of these men were real homosexuals or for that matter what society calls bisexual.
Do people really think that vast amounts of men in prisons are discovering they are gay? No they are looking for sexual release. Not all sexual experiences in the pokey regarding same sex experiences are based on some power relationship.
I had a quite a few friends that were on the vice squad and did these sting operations for lewd conduct in parks , movie theatres and restrooms. Their viewpoint was much the same as mine. That the majority of these men might have some degree of same sex attraction but their actions were done more of the thrill of the taboo. Heck I think their sexual disorder had much more to do with exhibitionism than homosexuality and bisexuality in many ways
In the marriage realm over the years when I encountered what appears to be the situation talked about in the Washington Post article I have come to a conclusion.
These guys would make horrible "partners" in a gay marriage. It was much more of sexual issue than a love issue. I could not imagine most of these guys in a relationship with any man that had deep rooted homosexual inclinations.
Now I am not saying that there are not people with deep rooted homosexual inclination in marriages. However I think their supposed "homosexuality" is a lot more varied than is advertised in the papers.
Anyway I just thought the article was interesting and how again people's vocabulary changes when it suits a political purpose.
