Well how times have changed. A few months ago there was all this talk of how President Obama (CITIZEN OF THE WORLD), by just being elected would bring the Olympics to Chicago in 2016. Oh well
See official web site here. Wilki has some good overview of Chicago plan.
Realty Check!!!
See No Obama a sign Chicago Olympic bid is shaky which a pretty good article in the AP.
I think the President is making the correct political move here. I am not buying the "I am too busy passing Health Care to go" excuse. What he can do in the White House no doubt he can do on Air Force One. Getting the Olympics would not only be a huge boost for Obama but doing it by going to Europe would sort of shore up the Obama worldwide myth so many of his supporters believe in.
It is a shame. I think the Olympics would be great there. Chicago is indeed a pretty fun city. In many ways I think it would be a much better venue than lets say Atlanta was. I like the fact that is in the central time Zone and it is a city that many people can too fairly easy.
I am also sure many local Universities want this bid. No doubt receive they would receive funds for facility upgrades for some events.
We also shall lose out on all fun potential political scandals that no doubt would have occurred in the aftermath as to contracts and such. Perhaps Obama realizes that maybe it is a good idea to keep some distance from that. In fact it does seem that perhaps some administration were already getting to close to some of it.. ACORN could be in charge of ticket distribution!!!!
I am rooting for Chicago to swing this. However the fact that the President is not making an personal appearance tells us many things.
